Program Goals:

• To enhance critical thinking skills of undergraduate students in the biological sciences at Oklahoma State University and Oklahoma two-year colleges, with emphasis on underrepresented minorities and women.
  

• To foster introduction of critical thinking skills into science and math classes at Oklahoma secondary schools.
  

Program Activities: 

• Research Scholarships are awarded to qualifying students seeking a degree in one of the eligible biological science majors at OSU-Stillwater. Awardees also participate in an annual research symposium and courses introducing research and critical thinking. • Curriculum Development Awards to Oklahoma State University faculty members support revision of courses essential to training of biological sciences majors and promote development of supplemental materials for student self-help.
  

• The Howard Hughes Resource Center at Oklahoma State University houses electronic hardware and software to disseminate supplemental materials arising from the curriculum development awards program and serves as a student self-help study center. • "Footlocker" Student Lab Experiments, demonstrating state of the art techniques such as DNA fingerprinting and the polymerase chain reaction, circulate among Oklahoma two-year colleges.
  

• The Science Education and Exploration (SEE) workshop provides secondary school and math teachers with strategies to improve students' critical thinking skills.

• The Biochemistry Research Scholars class introduces CTBS scholarship students and biochemistry and molecular biology freshmen to biological sciences research techniques.
